The J-Files are the tiny programs that make a world of difference for me. I'll include the homepage for each program where available. Please note that I exclusively use the Windows XP Professional operating system.

ffdshow - http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/

ffdshow is an open-source video codec for decoding/encoding various video and audio formats such as DivX and XviD, both of which are the most popular *.avi movie formats. Many movie files I'll share with you require this codec to run.

OGM guide - http://ld-anime.faireal.net/guide/ogm-en

If you're really into anime, you'll eventually bump into OGM files. Here's a good guide on playing OGM files.

BitComet is the bittorent client that I've had most success with. Torrents have redefined the internet file-sharing landscape.

With DVD Shrink, you can back up your DVD discs, encrypted or not.

Ad-Aware SE Personal - http://www.lavasoft.com/software/adaware/

Ad-Aware SE is a robust spyware detector, and is a huge upgrade from Ad-Aware 6.
