My Magnus Opus

This paper is most definitely my biggest accomplishment as a scientist, and it couldn't have happened without the support and love of my family, and of course, divine intervention.

omg lol...

Rudy Giuliani is my hero.

And while we're on it, how exactly does one improve the economy by raising taxes and making government bigger? I just don't understand it, so someone, preferably a liberal, please explain it to me.

Full disclosure: The main reason why I am leaning towards McCain this year is because Obama villainizes small business and big pharma. Further, Obama's attempts to become more centrist, to obviously enhance his electability, the past few weeks in my mind discredits him.

Things off the top of my head I like about Obama:

(a) message of entitlement, with particular attention to the disenfranchised
(b) charisma that inspires
(c) helping our fellow Americans who are less fortunate

My primary concerns about Obama:

(a) our current healthcare system is in major need of reform, but we can't afford to stifle innovation from medical and pharmaceutical institutions
(b) yes, Obama is raising taxes only for the top 5%, but those same top 5% largely dictate the flow of the American economy--they will cut jobs, invest less, and increase the prices of their goods and services--how will this NOT affect the rest of us? let me tell you what I think happened to our economy: 9/11, Katrina, China, subprime lending. And if you think about it, we already live on the blood and sweat of the upper middle class. Those below that level do not pay much in taxes at all.
(c) the needs of national security require unpopular executive decisions... can we afford to have a president who can't make tough, politically suicidal decisions? Obama can't vote "present" as president.
(d) the American energy solution must be multicomponent and environmentally responsible: why does Obama turn his back to valid parts of the solution such as offshore drilling and nuclear power? solar and wind are the sexiest solutions, but we can't put all our eggs in one basket.

My primary concerns about McCain:

(a) I adore McCain as a great American, but he has the charisma of a log--he doesn't inspire my generation of voters--where's the message of entitlement?
(b) we need to unite with other like-minded, freedom loving nations--can McCain unite the world?
(c) capitalism vs. socialism: as Americans we should know it takes a balance of the two for optimal progress... how can McCain not see a major need for healthcare reform?

My primary concern for America:

EDUCATION is the answer to many of our problems. I need to hear more about how Washington will empower teachers, parents, and students in a unifying manner. Right now it seems like both parties are politicizing the interests of teachers against the interests of parents and students when in reality everyone should be working together to improve the infrastructure of American education!

Lastly, McCain is NOT Bush, and it pisses me off everytime I hear that 90.5% remark. Tell me, how many times has Obama voted with Bush? As a thinking American, I need to understand that number better. What does 90.5% mean? Maybe Obama voted with Bush 70% of the time? Maybe the percentages are high because of no-brainer resolutions such as congratulating the New York Giants? In fact, McCain is probably the Republican that is most unlike our current president. The American people deserve better than a McSame, anti McCain campaign.

Democrats maybe do deserve an opportunity with the executive branch, but our future is much too important to base our decisions on the outdated formalisms of bipartisan politics. Regardless, this general election is Obama's to lose. Regardless, my vote will likely be for John McCain this November.

Metal Gear Solid 4

Quite possibly the best single player game I've ever played. Typically I only love games that afford cooperative/competitive play with friends, but MGS4... wow. Aside from a few odd ball lines and interesting character art, MGS4 redefines storytelling at its finest. This is what games (and dissertations) are all about, sharing a story.

Here are some songs from the Metal Gear Solid series that are currently dominating my playlist. If anyone needs help getting the Big Boss emblem, let me know (I'm such a nerd lol).

The Best is Yet to Come
Snake Eater
Twin Snakes
Encounter
Metal Gear Saga

Cowboy Bebop Track

One of my favorite CB tracks of all time. Bonus points if you can figure out which episode it's from.

Cowboy Bebop - ELM (8.3 megs)

Update: My brother just told me this tune is gay. To which I replied, "No it isn't! ...Okay, yea it is..."

So to offset it, here's another Bebop track.

Cowboy Bebop - On the Run (6.3 megs)

Update2: Percussion, ehhhhhh?

Cowboy Bebop - What Planet is This (5.1 megs)

Wicked Nike Football Commercial... Must DL/Watch if You Consider Yourself a Football Fan

From Nike's Leave Nothing ad campaign, featuring music from Trevor Jones, Randy Edelman, and Trevor Morris. You might recognize it from Showtime's The Tudors (which is wicked too, btw). So inspirational, really makes you feel like you can overcome anything.

Good Times

I recently bought the Chuck Norris Collection off of Amazon, and let me tell you, it's a must-own. I can't recall laughing harder in the past few years than I did watching The Delta Force yesterday with my buddy Dr. Wathahhhhhghagh Alani.

For you Chuck Norris fans out there, definitely check out:

Whilst watching the British Open, the crew there played Depeche Mode's It's No Good during a slow-mo capture of Sergio's swing. Golf and Depeche Mode? Who'd a-thunk it. Depeche Mode is hot. Check them out.

Oh yeah! A few months ago a friend got me onto Facebook. Check it out and add me.

It's been almost a year being a dissertator now! Crazy. I'm giving a departmental seminar early December, please come! It'll be a good time.

I'm really excited about getting my first first-author paper out... as soon as it does, expect the research section of the webpage to get a huge update. Peace and long life to you, dear friends.

Howdy, howdy, howdy!

Wow it's been over 7 months since my last blog! That's nuts!

Let's see... what's happened since then. My labmate Ling successfully defended her thesis! CONGRATS DR. XIAO!!! Yogeeta and Angki are next up... it's incredible how fast time flies. Before we know it, we'll be wondering: stocks or bonds?

As for me, I'm going to have an oral exam this Wednesday. If all goes well, it will be Dissertator Su--I'd be one more exam away from the promised land of approaching girls with the perfect pick-up line: "Hello, I'm Dr. Su." Oh, the science is an added bonus :P

Well enough of that. On the music front, there's this one song you need to listen to if you haven't already.

3 Days Grace - Animal I Have Become
(right click/save as, user/pw as usual)

The baseline in the opening sequence is simply amazing. Band website: http://website.threedaysgrace.com/ They've got a wicked music video of the song at the site.

The Most Important Attribute for Public Speaking

Confidence. When speaking in front of folks, whether its friends, strangers, the perfect girl, mobs with pitchforks, it's so important to believe in oneself. Not to the point of being inexorably cocky, but enough such that the speaker can convince the audience to listen for a few minutes.

David Hasselhoff has confidence. Anyone who can make this music video and let it go live has cajones of steel. Check this out lol.

Top Ten Thoughts about Katrina

10. http://www.amazon.com/paypage/PELYGQVJ8Q7IB

9. Bush is screwed. America's economy is screwed. The world's economy is screwed. And I'm moderate blue. I already see politicians using this event as a political weapon, when it really should be a unifier of people.

8. New Orleans, LA = William Golding's Lord of the Flies

7. Supermarkets across the major southern cities should have donated all of its standing inventory by Saturday night. Government subsidies to major food and transportation centers should have been proposed and passed by Friday.

6. 2,000 National Guardsmen can't secure millions of civilians. There are probably more than 2,000 felons on the loose from the prisons closing.

5. Natural disasters happen. Technology helps us forecast these events and exercise damage control. Martial law should have been in place in major cities under sea level and forcibly evacuated well before Katrina's landfall.

4. Capitalism at its worst in oil prices and media coverage. Sensationalistic, Geraldo-like coverage makes me sick. Despite that, on the whole, the media has done a sensational job at increasing public awareness of Katrina's impact.

3. The main job for any government is to protect its people. US Government legitimacy is on the line, and the world is watching.

2. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Helicopters rescuing persons one by one won't cut it when 1.2 million are trapped.

1. My prayers and thoughts go out to everyone directly afflicted by Katrina. We need to learn from this horrible event, and grow as a nation.

Presentations Require Preparation

Off of ebaumsworld.com, here's a didactic gem:

Sports News Blooper (6.2 megs; please view new download policy)

Since coming to Madison, I've given four major oral presentations about my research. I couldn't ask for a better coach than Professor Burnette. This semester though, time simply wasn't on my side for my last talk. Because of last-minute data analysis, I foolishly didn't practice my talk at all, and I came across pretty darn raw. I have since learned my lesson, and will prioritize better next time.

Going back to the subject, Brian Collins from this sports news blooper was worse off lol. I'm guessing something happened to the teleprompter. In any case, let me warn you before you watch: it's pretty brutal. It's amazing how ESPN anchors do it; they are so entertaining because they have an obvious love for the games, talking on a whim on an eclectic host of subjects like life-long experts. Brian Collins does not yet possess the impromptu type of skill necessary for good sportscasting, but nevertheless, I bestow upon him the purple kidney for his gutsy performance.

"Boom goes the dynamite!"

Phil Got Me Good

Every summer, my bro Phil and I go back to Los Angeles to spend time with our parents and grannies. My grannies are the koolest folks around--we spend most of our time together playing mah-jong, hitting some golf balls, and eating megalicious sushi. 2 summers ago, my brother got me real good.

There's a reason why there are so few pictures of yours truly. I absolutely hate cameras. Wait, hate is such a strong word... nope, I'm good. I hate cameras lol.

My loving brother took the above picture while I was in mid-swing. I have to admit, this one is pretty damn good lol. The ball is so peaceful, while the club and I are chaos incarnate. I have an excuse for this one: the club I was using was made for an ewok. Had I used a fitted club, I would have blasted this one 300 yards easy. Where's the love?!

My darling brother also took a picture of me enjoying a hearty helping of sashimi. Grandpa, my mah-jong sensei, is to my left. I don't think I want to expound on this picture any further.

Fun times, good memories roflmao. My brother is not only a JD, but has incredible paparazzi potential. Phil, if you're reading this, I'm gonna get you back good.

Here's an update on the website:

(a) because my research is at a crossroads and deserves my undivided attention, joesu.com will forward to my gaming community webpage for a while. In a matter of a couple days, the webpage focus will shift to a broader context.

(b) despite (a), I'm setting a goal of blogging at least twice a week.

(c) my pharmacy friend Jim requested more Simpsons encodes. I'm gonna oblige in the near future, thanks for checking this place out Jim!

Best Episode... Ever.

Holy frijoles, Batman! After watching 11 straight seasons of The Simpsons the past week, I have found my most favorite Simpsons episode thus far:

Season 11, Episode 2 - Brother's Little Helper

This episode is about Bart having to take the anti-ADD drug "Focusyn" (lol), and its cracks on Major League Baseball are just perfect timing ahahaha!!!one!1!!uno!! I suppose I am a bit biased since I'm in pharmacy, but lol it's sooo good. For a limited time, due to bandwidth and men-in-black-suits concerns, you can download the episode here:

(Please right click link and choose "save target as")

http://aoll.susstech.com/files/Simpsons-s11e02.avi (85.5 megs, ~20 minutes @ 70 kB/s, credit to robotolabs for their exquisite encodes)

Disclaimer: there are some relatively dirty jokes in this episode, so if you're the sensitive type, please don't watch this one!

Codec information: if you are having troubles playing the movie file, download and run the ffd codec (for more information, visit http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/):

http://aoll.susstech.com/files/ffdshow-20041012.exe (2 megs)

This codec is the big winner. That's it for now, gotta work on my slides, yay!

www.joesu.com

Haroh everybody, happy resurrection weekend! I hope everyone is well and uberlicious! Just giving mina (Pete-san and I are starting to learn Japanese!) a heads up. After my departmental seminar this Thursday, I'll be focusing on a new pet project: http://www.joesu.com.

I already have the domain name, DNS servers, and php-based layout set up. The site should go live in about a month. Despite the existentialist URL, the major focus for the website will be... you! Inspired by my long-lost friend Holming (http://www.holming.yuen.com/), I think a website is just a fantastic way to chronicle stuff. Ever since I left the gaming scene, I haven't really had an outlet for literary expression.

So if you know me, stay tuned! Who knows, your name might pop up, muahahahahaha.

Here's a quick preview of what's to come. Last weekend, relatives from Taiwan and the US came together to celebrate my grandparents' 80th! Family and food, good times.

From left to right (all relatives shown here are from my dad's side),
Front Row: grandpa, grandma
Middle Row: me, 2nd uncle, 2nd auntie, 1st auntie, mom, 3rd auntie, 3rd uncle
Back Row: dad, brother

Doesn't the caption remind you of the Paul, Peter, and Marie scene in Goodfellas? Best movie... ever.

Brax and Ayanna have reinstated the official AoLL webpage. Please note that http://www.lostlight.org does not work any longer. Instead, redirect your bookmarks to http://www.aoll.org. Please note that I've only uploaded my work to Brax's server. Brax will redirect the hardlinks soon, and install a forum and news system in the near future. Great work gang!

Concerning the future of http://aoll.susstech.com and its forums, they will be here to stay indefinitely regardless of utility.

Thanks for your patience!

Paging Braxis Prague and Friends

Please let me know (joesumo@hotmail.com) if you'd be interested in becoming administrators for the front page Blogger news system and for the phpBB forums. All I need is a heads up and email addresses to send out invites.

As for the forums, does anyone have a backup database file of the old lostlight.org forums? If so, once made an administrator, you may restore that database at your convenience or send that file to me to do so.

Happy Holidays!

To everyone I wish safe and happy holidays! Our regularly scheduled House Meeting will be cancelled in light of these times of rest and family togetherness. However, we will be scheduling some activities within the near future, so if you're interested, keep taps on our Questing Forum!

Thank you all for making this year go by so smoothly and successfully. By far, this year has been my most trying (academically), and I thank each and every one of you for being so understanding and patient with my RL endeavors. See you in-game :)

Housing Goals

The mansion east of Yanshi is currently up for sale!

The cost is:

20 writs, 20 golden grommies, 15 lucky gold letters, 7 idol gems, 2 dread mattaker paws, 10 million, rank 6

So far I have:

8 writs, 20 golden gromnies, 5 million, rank 5

Grand Needs (but please keep in mind requirements might change without notice!):

12 writs
15 golden letters
7 idol gems
2 paws
5 million
1 more rank

Officially, I will not be going for a villa. I believe this team deserves a mansion, and I will go down fighting for a mansion. I will not emphasize rank or numbers or anything of the kind during this mansion project. Our values will not change, but our goals will be clear: we goin to da seeezla.

Concerning donations, I will not push for that either. I will do my best to gather most of this on my own... because although we all will be owners of this house, I will be the only one who can recall... I think this is a big oversight that Turbine made, and a very big mistake. Nonetheless, *any* donations for the house will be accounted for and greatly appreciated (contact me by any means and I'll get wit ja)! I will be keeping tabs on the progress on that forum. Please keep to them boards, and we will get everything sorted out asap!

Dark Majesty in Full Swing

Players with invalid subscription coupons should be able to redeem them now (I just did, w00t!). There is some great hunting at the new island, especially the new olthoi dungeons (Olthoi claws and yellow vrindi gems yield lots of experience and various prizes now, so save them up!). I'll be posting everything I find on the BBS :)

    Patch-day

As with any patch-day, please avoid mass muling, mass hunting, or any action of large consequence. Patch-days in the past have proved to be rather unstable :) Exploring and figuring out quests [and new areas] with a light heart could be more productive. Enjoy!

    Tragedy

Our hearts go out to those whose lives have been changed because of the recent developments in America. Although our world is fantasy, our community is equally real as those in RL. I hope if I may be of any assistance or counsel, that no one hesitates to reach me. This Sunday during the House Meeting (2:00 pm pst) we will have a moment of silence in order to wish those involved well.

    Compendium Temporarily Down

Due to the troubles with AC sage and my adolecent lack of monitary items (means I'm poor cause I'm young), and also because I have been unable to find a suitable freehosting agency, I'm going to put the closed for repairs sign on the AoLL Compendium. If you have any questions regarding tradeskills, just post on the board designed for it.

    House Meeting this Sunday!

Hope you all have been enjoying the patch despite the server issues :) According to State of the Code, the recent lag episodes have been caused by preventative measures against a speed-hack known as GEAR. Please becareful and be aware that there are still lag issues. Until we get official notice from Turbine or MS Zone concerning the improvement of latency maladies, we will not sponsor any quests with any potential danger.

There will be a House meeting this coming Sunday at 2:00 pm PST at the Yanshi farmhouse. We have a bunch to discuss and I hope to see you all there! Gaidheil and I should have the meeting transcript a week after.

    Hosting Paid

Hey guys :) I've paid ACSage for hosting this month, so this website will still be online for a bit. I have certain issues with our transition that must be dealt with before any sort of termination goes on. The speed of these boards should improve, if not, there are going to be some icky emails I'm gonna send to our system admins hehe.

Please have our major mirror sites still bookmarked in case of emergencies:

  • http://aoll.homeip.net (courtesy of Shup Yu)
  • http://www.megacare.com/aoll (will be online in 2 weeks)

Site deletion will occur on August 10th. By this time, I should have a new host for the non php/cgi apps. Please stay tuned for an announcement on motd. Thanks to everyone for offering their support :) We'll get the ball rolling again asap.

    Kudos!

Mmmmm Kudos yummy yummy § (candy wrapper, can't you see my artistic genious?!). Fantastic effort everyone! We totally ownerized Shivering, Smoldering, and Sparkling stone. Furthermore, Cloister was successful considering the lack of woman/manpower we had. For our 2nd Chakron run, we've discerned a better run path (Thx Anna!) from Black Dominion. Additionally, we know what to expect post-split.

Please refer to the Quest Forums for updated schedules and discussions! Chakron will happen again next week, and Cloister is being proposed for sometime this week as well. Lastly, I will be scouting for other Chakron opportunities that other clans may run and posting them on the appropriate Quest Forum threads. If you can, please do attend those Chakron runs as well. Perfection comes with practice and patience.

    Quests for 7/27 Weekend

    In chronological order:

  • Shivering Stone- Wed July 25th 7:00 pm pst
  • Smoldering Stone- Fri July 27th 6:00 pm pst
  • Fenmalain Quest- Sat July 28th 5:00 am pst
  • Fenmalain Quest- Sat July 28th 10:00 am pst
  • Cloister- Sun July 29th 11:00 am pst
  • Chakron Flux- Sun July 29th 3:00 pm pst

Please check quest forum for fullest details on each of these quests. If you've already mastered cloister and are still within level restricts, we absolutely need your leadership for this quest. Chakron Flux will need many, many participants to make things work, please post there for full briefing and abort parameters. We're going to go as far as possible this weekend; this is our time!

Thanks to everyone for proposing quests! :) We are changing the format for quest requests, so please read Annalena's suggestion post before starting any new threads in the quest forum. Most importantly, remember to suggest times in subject headings or the quest plan will be difficult to execute or follow up on. See you Gna!

    Chakron Scouting

Sunday the 22nd at 3 pm PST we're sponsoring our first Chakron Flux scouting efforts. The meeting place will be at Shoushi 35 75.3. Level brackets for Chakron Flux are:

  • Lower: L 36-45
  • Higher: L41-126

Since we are not necessarily doing the quest, please bring your highest level characters. The run from Tumideon Fortress to the Flux is extremely dangerous, and we'll see critters like Diamond Golems, Tuskers, Destroyer Grivers, Ulu Sclavi, Vrindi, and Obsidian Golems (so please bring as many protects as you can). Once we reach the Flux (L 36+ may enter the first portal), we'll face critters like S and T hollow minions, Tuskers, and Vrindi. Bludgeon Protection and Armor is needed at the *very* least. Fire/Piercing should be the weapon of choice :) Hollow minions are particularly weak against cold.

If you cannot make this meeting, don't fret! Another scouting effort is being scheduled for next week too :P Hope to see you all then!

    Quest Coordinators

I'm in the process of developing a database for known quests (that the team has done in some fashion) that will facilitate more efficient planning and coordination. In addition, for those who wish to lead or coordinate a particular quest (ie. Sho nilrem for major fire stone, Annalena for atlan tool and focusing stone, Zen Chao for soul fearing), I'm hoping this database will provide useful resources so that the quests may be planned and executed as smoothly and as enjoyable as possible. If you're interested in sponsoring a particular quest, send me a private message via forum index and I'll add you in!

This is a long term project, so I expect full implementation in about 1-2 months. Thanks yalls!

    State of Focus

Great job to everyone on Sunday for mastering Stronghold yet *again* :) Last Saturday our Cloister party did not have enough ppl for the quest to take off. As a small reminder, Cloister gives the Barbed Tool/Obsidian Dagger (Lv 15-25) and the Skull of Av. Pal. (Lv 21-30). Next weekend we need everyone who can make cloister (even if you've already mastered it) to help those who haven't done it! Please check the thread for full details.

In other news, anyone who wants to participate in l00gie nights or 0lth0i nights please post good times in their respective forums. Aerilinthe Hunts are currently scheduled for 10 am PST Sundays, but might be postponed to 11 am PST if everyone interested agrees to that time. We meet at Shoushi Proper (center fountain), all Level 45+ welcomed to join!

Lastly, next week we're going to sponsor a scouting for Chakron Flux. The run to Chakron Flux is shortest from the Tumideon Fortress, which is extremely deadly and will take some getting used to. The current proposed time for this run is Sunday 2:00 pm PST. Hope to see you all there!

    Time Warp

First, I want to congratulate everyone for a job well done! In the short time during this summer, we've mastered Cloister and Stronghold; now we are redirecting our focus on the last leg of the Hope Slayer's episode: Chakron Flux. This excursion is no easy task, and it requires the cooperation of our highest level characters as well as graduates from stronghold (level 36-45). Please stay tuned for a full briefing concerning our new objective!

In other news, I've contacted Tyme (sys admin) about the recent server time warps we've been experiencing. Unofficially, there were 2 time-warps that occured within the past week. Please help me keep an eye on our message board database, and contact me immediately if you see any other discrepancies. Thanks for your patience guys :)

Welcome to Blogger! I'm currently testing a news management proggy that has key new features:

  • allows more webpage admins to post news without the html mess
  • creates a standard template for news and archives
  • allows news to be posted quickly via browser interaction

I've been working on a news management proggy so more admins can post on the front page with relative ease :) Let's get the show on the road!
